GOOGLE PLAY SCREENSHOT GUIDELINES

Google Play Screenshot Guidelines for Apps and Games

Google Play separates minimum publishing requirements from recommendations that make listings eligible for more promotional formats. Build the listing on accurate in-app experience first, then use captions, device categories, and high-resolution output to make that experience easy to understand.

Minimum Google Play screenshot requirements

A listing needs at least two screenshots across supported device types and can include up to eight for each device type. Screenshots must be JPEG or opaque 24-bit PNG, with each dimension between 320 and 3840 pixels. The long dimension cannot exceed twice the short dimension.

These are publication requirements, not a complete optimization recipe. For screenshot-led recommendation formats, apps should provide at least four screenshots at 1080px or higher in 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portrait. Games should provide at least three images in one of those high-resolution orientations.

  • At least 2 screenshots across device types
  • Up to 8 screenshots for each supported device type
  • JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha
  • 320–3840px per dimension; long edge no more than 2× short edge

Show actual app or game experience

The listing should help a potential user anticipate the installed experience. Feature the most important real workflow, content, or gameplay and keep claims consistent with the current release. A polished marketing background should clarify the interface, not replace it with fictional screens.

Avoid ranking, award, download-count, price, sale, or time-limited promotional language. Google also advises keeping additional text minimal because screenshots may be cropped or displayed on surfaces beyond the detail page.

Prepare phone and large-screen sets independently

Google Play supports phone, 7-inch tablet, 10-inch tablet, Chromebook, TV, Wear OS, Automotive, and XR asset categories. Use the categories the product genuinely supports and capture the interface at that form factor.

For tablet and Chromebook recommendation eligibility, Google recommends at least four screenshots between 1080 and 7680px in 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portrait. Do not enlarge a phone capture and call it a tablet screenshot; show navigation, layout, and content density designed for the larger screen.

Localize screenshot text and accessibility descriptions

When screenshots contain captions, provide a separate set for each supported listing language. Translate the interface as well as the marketing copy and recheck line length rather than reusing English typography blindly.

Google Play supports alt text for graphic assets. Describe the important product state concisely instead of repeating “image of” or using the field as another keyword list.

Google Play submission checklist

Review the exported rail at thumbnail size and at full resolution. Then validate it inside the correct Play Console device section before publishing.

  • Files are opaque JPEG or 24-bit PNG
  • Every screen represents the current release
  • Phone and tablet layouts match their device categories
  • No rankings, price promotions, or install calls to action
  • Caption and interface language match the listing
  • At least four 1080p images are ready for the primary app category when recommendation eligibility matters
