SCREENSHOT COPYWRITING

App Store Screenshot Copywriting: A Practical Guide

Screenshot copy has a narrow job: direct attention to the value already visible in the product. It is not a miniature description field. The strongest lines are specific enough to matter, short enough to scan, and honest enough for the screen beneath them to prove.

Use the benefit–mechanism–proof model

Begin with the user benefit, identify the product mechanism that creates it, and choose the screen that proves the mechanism. The visible headline usually needs only the benefit or a benefit-plus-mechanism line. The supporting copy can clarify one condition, but it should not carry an entire sales argument.

For example, “Smart planning” names a category but says little. “Rebuild your day when plans change” identifies a useful outcome, and an automatically reprioritized schedule can prove it. Specificity makes the line easier to believe and helps the designer choose the right interface state.

Rewrite feature labels as outcomes

Feature names are useful inside a product, but store visitors often do not know why the feature matters. Translate the label into the result it creates, then remove every word that does not change the promise. Avoid broad adjectives such as powerful, revolutionary, ultimate, or seamless unless the screen supplies a specific, verifiable meaning.

Keep the tone consistent with the product. A finance tool may need calm precision; a game can use energy; a meditation app benefits from space. The goal is not to sound loud—it is to sound immediately relevant.

Give each screenshot one message

A panel with three headlines, four badges, and a paragraph forces the visitor to decide what matters. Give the panel one primary line and, only when necessary, one supporting sentence. Let the interface handle the detail. This improves thumbnail readability and gives localization room later.

Across the rail, vary the message rather than the writing style. Use parallel grammar, similar headline length, and a stable point of view. If one line addresses the reader as “you,” avoid switching to third-person product descriptions on the next panel.

  • Aim for one or two headline lines
  • Prefer a concrete verb or result
  • Use supporting copy only to add new information
  • Read the five headlines aloud as one sequence

Avoid claims that create trust or review risk

A screenshot is part of store metadata. Do not use rankings, awards, download counts, performance statistics, or superlatives that cannot be substantiated and kept current. “The #1 planning app” is fragile even when it was true in one market for one day. “Plan work around the time you actually have” describes the product without borrowing authority.

Avoid prices, sales, “install now,” or limited-time language in evergreen screenshots. They age quickly, complicate localization, and can conflict with store presentation guidance. Show real features available in the submitted version and make conditions clear when a promise depends on a subscription, device, or permission.

  • Remove “best,” “#1,” and unsupported comparison claims
  • Do not imply unavailable premium features are free
  • Avoid temporary prices and seasonal dates
  • Do not expose private data or real account details

Plan copy that can be localized

Write the source line clearly rather than using puns, stacked idioms, or English-only wordplay. A translator can preserve a concrete outcome more reliably than a clever phrase with no direct equivalent. Keep editable text outside the screenshot source so each market can be typeset again.

Translation length changes. Do not reduce every language to an unreadable font size to preserve one exact line break. Protect a flexible text region, allow two headline lines, and review the screenshot with the localized interface rather than only replacing the marketing copy.

Use this worksheet before opening the design tool. If two rows say essentially the same thing, merge them and spend the freed panel on stronger evidence—or publish a shorter sequence.

Frequently asked questions

How much text should an App Store screenshot contain?

Use one short headline and only add a supporting line when it contributes new information. Thumbnail readability matters more than reaching a word count.

Can screenshots contain marketing text?

Yes, but it should remain accurate, legible, localized, and consistent with the product users receive.

Should every screenshot use a different headline?

Yes. Each panel should advance the story with a distinct benefit, workflow, differentiator, or trust signal.

Can I write “best” or “number one” in a screenshot?

Avoid unsupported rankings and superlatives. Use a concrete product benefit the visible interface can demonstrate.
